LeBron James' latest decision shows that chasing history is still a top priority for him.

It was the middle of a July day in 2026 when LeBron James shocked the NBA yet again by making a big free agency announcement. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, James is now joining the Philadelphia 76ers.

This is odd considering that James has more connections with both the Cleveland Cavaliers, his hometown team, and the Miami Heat who he won two titles in the past. However, in James on words via the X app, this is about bringing a title to Philadelphia. While on the surface, fans should take James for his word, it's also clear that LeBron is chasing more than just a ring; he's chasing NBA history in more than just one respect.

Rings and records are at stake for LeBron James

Let's start with the title aspect. If LeBron wins a title in Philly, he would have claimed his fifth NBA championship. Breaking the tie with future and current Hall of Famers like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Shaquille O'Neal, Manu Ginóbili, and Tony Parker with four titles should interest James.

He would join the likes of Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Magic Johnson, George Mikan, and Dennis Rodman. Then, if he wins back-to-back titles with the 76ers, he would tie Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bob Cousy, and Scottie Pippen with six championships.

Another aspect of the record aspect regard titles is that right now LeBron is tied with Robert Horry, Danny Green, and John Salley as the only four players to win championships with three separate NBA franchises. If LBJ wins one or more with the Sixers, then he'd be in a new category all by himself. That is a record that James could set as well.

In terms of stats, there are still several areas LeBron could continue to break records or climb the leaderboards in. It's already well documented that James is the all-time leading scorer during the regular season and playoffs, along with several other categories.

Currently, LBJ is seventh in NBA/ABA history in defensive rebounds. He trails the following players:

  1. Artis Gilmore: 11,514

  2. Kevin Garnett: 11,453

  3. Karl Malone: 11,406

  4. Tim Duncan: 11,232

  5. Dwight Howard: 10,476

  6. Moses Malone: 10,452

  7. LeBron James: 10,253

It should be relatively easy for LeBron to jump into the top five of this list, and he could theoretically pass Duncan as well, depending on how much he rebounds per game in both seasons in Philly.

He might be able to second all-time in NBA/ABA history in assists this season based on the current top five list.

  1. John Stockton: 15,806

  2. Chris Paul: 12,552

  3. Jason Kidd: 12,091

  4. LeBron James: 12,016

  5. Russell Westbrook: 10,351

While passing John Stockton is unrealistic, passing Jason Kidd and Chris Paul is not only realistic but likely if James plays point guard on offense, as Charania has reported. If that does happen, LBJ would be top two in both scoring and assists, which would strengthen his argument around him being the best player in NBA history. It should also be noted that LeBron James is only 179 assists away from becoming the all-time NBA/ABA playoff assists leader as well, which could be within his grasp as well.

James is also ranked sixth all-time in NBA/ABA history in career steals, and there's a real chance for him to jump into the top five in that category as well.

  1. John Stockton: 3,265

  2. Chris Paul: 2,728

  3. Jason Kidd: 2,684

  4. Michael Jordan: 2,514

  5. Gary Payton: 2,445

  6. LeBron James 2,417

It's more than likely he will jump Gary Payton on this list, but there's a decent chance he also passes Michael Jordan on this list as well. In total, there are four categories of stats that James could make significant strides in or even get to the top of.

Let's not forget that if LeBron James does play both years of his contract with the 76ers, then he would have played for 25 seasons in the NBA. Playing a quarter century in any sport is a really unique accomplishment in sports history. Will chasing history impact the legacy and impact of James? Regardless of whether you think it will or will not, it will be fun for fans to watch.
